In LAD, cells are unable to migrate to site of inflammation.
The first indication of this defect is omphalitis (swelling and reddening around the stalk of the umbilical cord).
They have abnormally high numbers of granulocytes in circulation but pus and abscess do not occur.

There are two types of this disease -
Leukocyte adhesion deficiency type I (LAD I) is a failure to express CD18, which composes the common ß2 subunit of LFA1 family (ß2 integrins).
Leukocyte adhesion deficiency type II is extremely rare; it manifests in people with the Bombay blood group phenotype.

It is diagnosed by evaluating expression (or lack) of the beta chain (CD18) of the integrin by flow cytometry.
